turn off the tv!

... or better yet, don't turn it on!

In honor of Make Week: Turn Off Your TV and Make Life Happen, I've made a TV cozy. This project has been on my list for quite a while now and reading Sarah Baldwin's story on Simple Organic was just the push I needed.

With dreams of homeschooling Fiona (And future babies!) in the future, I have been thinking a lot about greatly reducing the amount of TV-watching that goes on in our house. If you know me, you know that I have a bit of a cable news addiction. I find myself turning on the TV in the morning and then just... leaving it on. I'm not even watching it most of the time! I've started feeling like the background noise is cluttering my brain!

I think the TV cozy is a playful way of reminding us that not all the time is TV time.

That is a pretty crafty idea, Miranda! I didn't even know such a week existed...we are extremely tuned "out" here in the middle of nowhere, British Columbia. We have no television, and we don't listen to the radio because all the news seems to be so gloomy and I am so sensitive to what my kids hear, even if it is subconsciously. We do watch movies occasionally (4 in the last 21 months), but that is about it. And amazingly, I don't even miss it! When I visit my folks, I never sit with them anymore in their nightly ritual of tv watching. Anyhow, if we did watch the tube, I think I would like to have a tv cozy, too. Brilliant idea.

Very nice project! I'll be right back... I need to turn off Fox News....

Jules, I think we might end up there eventually. I would love to get rid of the TV all together, but my family isn't quite ready! I like the idea of just watching the occasional movie.

Mom, very brave of you to admit you watch Fox. ;)

Supercute! I think being aware of television use is crucial, we download everything we watch so we are aware of what is being watched and for how long, I like that the tv can't just be 'on' and running in the background. Though I do feel a bit out of touch sometimes, that isn't always a bad thing! Also I find North American "news' channels very strange so I can't watch them, I get my news via the internet, usually BBC online : )

umm - you don't know me - never met me in fact - so, this is just an unsolicited opinion: bad idea, this TV cozy - you are aware that the World Cup TV coverage begins in 49 days and NFL Football coverage is only about 120 days away - i sure hope nothing bad happens to this terrible terrible invention in the next few weeks....

Emmalina - I am going to try getting the news via internet.... though, sometimes I think I need a computer cozy too. ;)

Anonymous Husband - I'm not sure how things work in your house, since I've never met you, not even once, but in my house, I make the rules. Because I'm in charge. xoxo
